Sure, the announcement of an HD version of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is surprising, but you expect Nintendo to do that, right? No, my biggest surprise announcement from today's Nintendo Direct event is "X". What is "X"? It's Nintendo's first party developer Monolith Soft's follow-up to Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii. It may or may not be a Xenoblade game and "X" is probably not its official title, but... ah, just watch the trailer.
Basically, it's a sci-fi action title with giant monsters that look quite a bit like dinosaurs. I would say it looks quite a bit like Monster Hunter meeting Star Ocean, but obviously that's not a real thing. As such, it's probably a Xenoblade-style game meant to emulate the open world nature of Monster Hunter, along with its larger than life battles. In other words, it looks great. I mean, the dude lopped the head off of a brontosaurus looking dino-monster. Rad.
At the end of about a minute of gameplay a giant red "X" was displayed on the screen. There was no trademark symbol, no platform information, release date or small print, so I think it's safe to assume "X" isn't the game's final title -- just a code name. What I think it's mean to imply is that this is a Xenoblade game. X, Xenoblade, I know... rocket science, right?
Look forward to more information on Monolith Soft's "X" for the Wii U as we get closer to E3. By far my favorite announcement of the Nintendo Direct event, the game looks like a lot of epic fun.
PS: Anyone else notice the chat going on during gameplay? Are we looking at a multiplayer game, or maybe a first-party MMO for the Wii U?
