It's clearly a follow up to Xenoblade: the big red 'X'; the gameplay style; and those attack icons at the bottom of the screen are very similar.
I'm slightly concerned about the colour balance, though. Xenoblade Chronicles was so wonderfully bright and colourful, but this new one looks like everything is tinged with grey and brown, even the ostensibly green plains.

Also, how can this be your biggest surprise announcement when we already knew that Monolith were creating a game for the Wii U? Given Monolith's track record it was almost certain to be an RPG, and a follow-up to Xenoblade was at least conceivable. But Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem, on the other hand... No one could have predicted that.

bond007106 That's really what threw me off. I mean, it has to be Xenoblade, right? But Xenoblade has always had a really stylized look, where this new game is super realistic. Not to mention the gameplay is radically different.

Sure, Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem is random. Might be bigger if it had some gameplay. Come on though, bond! MULTIPLAYER XENOBLADE IN HD WITH HEAVY INFLUENCE FROM MONSTER HUNTER!? Slap me in the face and call me Batman, this could be HUGE.

Xenoblade is already heavily influenced by Monster Hunter. Pretty much the only thing it had left to add was co-op multi-player.
And apart from the addition of being able to pilot some sort of mech, what about the gameplay is so radically different from Xenoblade? It seems pretty similar to me. Not the same, obviously, it's certainly been ramped up a bit (to go with the giant monsters I suppose), but it's recognizably similar.

Also, I object to you calling this new game's art style super-realistic. A world with that little colour is not realistic in the slightest; it's what's so unrealistic about the graphics in most first-person shooters. The colour balance in Xenoblade Chronicles was far closer to realistic than this new one is.

The trailer reminded me of a bit of Monster Hunter, with a dash of Lost Planet.

Hopefully this game will include some more exotic locations than were shown in this trailer, the setting was a big part of what made Xenoblade so cool. Speaking of which, I really need to finish that game.

Haha, it's not like I was trying to be deceptive, or insinuate it wouldn't be a Xenoblade title. It very clearly is meant to be part of that franchise. However, it does look like a radical change from previous titles, which could mean a rebranding.

Personally, I think it just means Nintendo wants to keep the name a secret, as it's probably something like Xenouniverse, or something else especially telling about its multiplayer.

Um, what the hell does this or xenoblade have to do with monster hunter? And how is monster hunter, which is so not open world its divided into teeny tiny areas with a loading screen between each area, the inspiration for xenoblade 2 to go open world, when the first title is one of the biggest hand crafted open world/no loading, in videogames?

Becuase bluexy, in true journalistic fashion, has not done sufficient research.

Well, they are fighting giant monsters, which has never happened in any video game other than Monster Hunter, obviously.

Joking aside, multiplayer monster slaying wasn't started by Monster Hunter, but it is the reason it became such a huge genre and thus credit where credit is due.

Tekmosis Akira_EX I wish it could be a Xenogears title! The IP is still with Square though after the series creator left to form Monolith. That X is straight from the Xenogears box art though, huh? Gosh... could Nintendo have bought the license from Square? HMMMMM

It has pilotable giant robots, and I liked Xenoblade, I'm pretty much obligated to play it.

I haven't even played Xenogears and I noticed it from the logo almost instantly.

The game's probably gonna be a spiritual successor to both, an actual "Xenoblade 2" even, but with lots of Xenogears elements. Like the giant robots.
