Japanese developer Gamepot is bringing their "hardcore MMO" Wizardry Online to North America, with a little help from Sony Online Entertainment. Wizardry Online is a rather odd amalgamation of themes and gameplay, mixing the difficulty and atmosphere of Dark Souls with the gameplay and combat of a free-to-play MMO, but add in a layer of anime on top. Whoa, anime, what? Oh right, I did mention it's from Japanese developers.
Perhaps the best summary of what to expect from Wizardry Online is this short list found on the game's home page. I won't lie, it sort of made me die laughing the first time I read it:
3 Great Reasons to Play
- Hardcore MMORPG Players Rejoice!
- Avoid Permadeath!
- Amazing Anime Characters and Creatures!
Now, there's nothing inherently wrong with anime characters and creatures, it's just an odd sort of imagery to think of in terms of a hardcore game with perma-death. For instance, imagine a bloody duel with an invader in Dark Souls that ends in your defeat. As the screen goes black your opponent reaches up to their helmet, lifts it up, and all you see is ":3". Damnit, video games.
Anyways, Wizardry Online was originally planned to be released today, but unfortunately had to delay in order to make some "final preparations." We're expecting more details soon, but in the mean time make sure to check out this totally metal trailer. There's no registration up yet, but check out the game's website for more info.
