Early details on Disney's upcoming cross-franchise response to Skylanders and LittleBigPlanet are starting to be unveiled at an ongoing press event. Disney Infinity will introduce collectible toys, franchise specific multiplayer play sets and a customizable 3D sandbox called the Toy Box to create an experience with extraordinary scope, the likes of which only Disney could create. Launching in June, Disney Infinity will becoming to consoles first and then handheld and mobile platforms later this year.
Launching with play sets for Pirates of the Caribbean, The Incredibles and Monsters University, just how that translates into purchasable products is still unclear. You see, each play set will be like its very own game. For example the Pirates set will be action heavy with combat, but the Monsters University set is focused on fun and customization. Characters from each franchise won't be able to cross over into other play sets, so no Mr. Incredible in Tortuga. In the sandbox-style Toy Box, however, all's fair.
The Toy Box will feature a sort of open world, 3D LittleBigPlanet setting where players can customize their experience with bits of all their play sets. Then, after the world is as they see fit, players can switch the collectible figure on their platform and play whatever Disney/Pixar character they please. Hmm, it all sounds rather complicated, doesn't it? Perhaps the trailer below will be a better introduction.
Disney Infinity will launch in June with play sets for Pirates of the Caribbean, The Incredibles and Monsters University, and likely a series of toys for each of those properties as well. Look for more information on how exactly the game will be distributed, or other upcoming play sets soon.
