After receiving the press release from Sega that announced The Cave's release date and price point, I rushed to designer/creator Ron Gilbert's Twitter account to see his perspective. After all, beyond Death Spank this is one of Ron Gilbert's first games since the early 90s with Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle. The Cave will be releasing on PSN and Wii U on January 22 and then on XBLA and PC on the 23, but what does Ron Gilbert think of the occasion?
"I just spilled orange juice all over my keyboard. No, this is not a solution to an adventure game puzzle. I really spilled it. In real life.
Breaking news! Ron Gilbert is celebrating the announcement that The Cave will be releasing on the 22 by accidentally spilling orange juice on his keyboard. Fans of Ron Gilbert are experimenting with spilling orange juice on their keyboards hoping it's an adventure game puzzle that may somehow unlock The Cave a week early.
In all seriousness, The Cave looks like a lot of fun. A 2D-style adventure game that sort of plays like a mix between Maniac Mansion and a Metroidvania style game? Sold. As you can see in the trailer, there are seven potential protagonists in The Cave. At the start, you select three characters, each with a "power" that will allow various methods of area traversal and puzzle solving. It's bound to be a unique experience, if anything.
Check out The Cave on PSN and Wii U starting January 22 for $14.99, or on XBLA or PC for 1200MSP and $14.99 respectively.
