I'm a big fan of game teasers anyways, but when it's Square Enix teasing what looks to be an RPG with an image of old school sprites arranged like they're in turn-based combat? Enough said, right? Add in a big "1.17" and teaser confimed. The story doesn't end there though, because in the page's source code is a link to an iTunes listing for All The Bravest. Oh, well there goes the surprise I suppose.
Nevertheless! While I'm not a huge fan of the quality of games Square Enix has been releasing for mobile platforms, I am a very big fan of classic Final Fantasy-style RPGs. The kind with epic pixelated sprites and turn-based combat, black mages and fighters and more. So whatever this All The Bravest game may be, I say bring it on and bring it on fast.
After some investigative reporting was done, it was found that the monster sprite from the teaser is none other than Final Fantasy 6's behemoth. The other sprites are reminiscent of thief and mage sprites, but not exact copies. I'm thinking a throwback experience of some kind, but not a full fledged remake of a Final Fantasy title.
Expect the full announcement on January 17, but keep in mind the teaser only appears on Japan's Square Enix website. That means, unless another teaser pops up in the next few days, there will be a localization period even after this game is released. Bah, that's no fun at all.
