I hope whoever thought up Skylanders got a big promotion, because the franchise is really paying off for Activision. Today, the publisher reported that the franchise as a whole has surpassed $500 million in retail sales, at least in the United States.
This includes not just the game, but also all the accessory packs and figures, though Activision does note that this is "faster than any other kids' gaming property." When you combine the sales of figurines from both Skylanders Giants and the previous Skylanders Spyro's Adventure, the franchise has beaten (read: outsold) the US' top action figure lines, which includes WWE, Star Wars, and Beyblades.
As for the more recent Skylanders Giants, that follow-up title was named the best-selling kids' game in 2011, bringing in over $195 million in US sales (again, including all the accessories and figures) in 2012.
Whatever thinking that makes Pokemon successful is clearly at work here, too.
