Sony's Santa Monica Studio has endeavored to produce a documentary detailing the development of God of War: Ascension's multiplayer mode. The first two parts of the series, in a convenient trailer-sized format, are available now and we've got them posted below. "A New Beginning" and "A Long Tech Journey" make up the early part of the Unchained documentary, and will hopefully hold fans over until single player details start to roll out.
To be honest, just coming from the perspective of having watched a decent number of game development documentaries recently, these God of War videos feel a bit too heavily manufactured -- scripted really. While I don't doubt the sincerity of the developers and the reality of the issues they discuss, it's all presented in a way to prevent any negative perception of the product.
For instance, there are several "interviews" with player testers who have tried out the multiplayer, but not a negative comment is to be found. Then, in the second video, they talk at length about rebuilding combat to hide lag, but they never show show the game in a state where the lag had effect.
God of War: Ascension is currently scheduled for March 12, exclusively for the PS3, and multiplayer absolutely looks like a blast. By all means, they can market their videos however they like, so give them a view and take what you will as you please.
