Blur 2 could have happened, former art director reveals gameplay details and impressive footage
New engine, overhaul to abilities, and so much more
Bizarre Creations is no more, but evidence of unreleased work remains. The latest? Some footage released by Bizarre's former art director Chris Davie, showing gameplay of what might've eventually become Blur 2. Looks pretty damn good, too.
The first Blur had its faults, and despite being an overall solid game, didn't hold enough potential to Activision to warrant a franchise. Still, even in developer Bizarre Creations' final hours, work on an unannounced title continued. While Davie doesn't explicity refer to any of the gameplay as being Blur 2, he describes some experimentation using assets from Blur.
The video we see essentially shows some new visual effects, a test of how increasingly extravagant effects might affect player performance (like driving through a storm or dodging weapons).
Davie also mentions that the new "Shunt" power-up would've gotten a major overhaul too, changing from the red ball effect to a "big refractive energy pulse," as the video shows.
"The 'Shunt' power up also got an overhaul from the big red ball in Blur, to a big refractive energy pulse here. This new one would throw tear up the road as it homed in on its target, leaving a trail of broken tarmac and scattered, twisted lampposts.
We were pretty pleased with the results, some of the fullscreen effects when you were in the wake of the power up were a bit intense, but overall it was really fun."
He writes a little more about the nonexistent Blur 2 on his own blog. Update: The posts seem to have disappeared or been removed.
