It's a ridiculously stupid move from Sony but I can't say it will affect me personally all that much considering I buy the majority of my games new. Still doesn't change the fact that it's a terrible business decision though. It's a long shot but isn't it the way patents work that only the patent owner or whatever can use that method or something along those lines? As you can probably tell I know bugger all about them but maybe Sony is patenting it so that Microsoft can't do it? Again it's a long shot but just because they patent something doesn't mean they'll use it right?

Boyd Nothing official on this from Sony yet, so it could be nothing at all. The tech in this patent, however, would certainly allow them to block the play of rented games as well. That is, if they do end up using it.

Yeah I know, done some researching and this come up in 2005 before the ps3 was released

Don't worry folks, protection against second-had market just a myth!!! It will never happen with future consoles. The scare campaign in relation to pre-owned market for PS3 was launched before, but it's still a myth.

I can assure it's a 'complete destruction' for either game industry or retail industry...Neither can survive for long-term without supporting each other.

Should PlaySation 4 proceed with that narrow-minded plan, it's a suicide for the Sony Computer Entertaniment Incorporation...Kaz wouldn't do that, would he? Unless, Sony has some bushido!!!

Wasn't Microsoft rumored to be doing this first? So i'll laugh at the people saying they'll switch to Xbox for that reason.

This won't happen anyway, because this gen has been the most unreliable in terms of consoles and if next gen has any kind of failure rate, and that happens to you, you will have to buy every single game again to play it on your new console

Deffiently don't think this is true. If it is, well damn sucks for most people I don't buy used games anymore nor do I go trade my games in now. Brand new games get cheap eventualy, if you truley are excited about a game then chances are you will get it at launch and for full price too. Other then that this really doesent effect me so yeah haters will hate

I don't get the people doubting this is real, the patent is VERY real. What is in question is if Sony will use this to block used game. I honestly see them using it to track used games sales, and new game rentals.

Well, consoles are going straight to shit lol. If Xbox and PS interprets this terrible idea, I'm shelving my consoles plus games to start saving for a gaming PC[now we know why PC is truly better...]

This patent will effectively kill game renting[and possibly give producers for movies this idea as well], so say goodbye to Family Video, Blockbuster, that family owned video store down the street... oh and not to mention, Xbox/PS's reputations.

The only video store left for me is this shitty Blockbuster, I went in once and it was down right depressing.

But yeah. PS3, you and the 360 are going to be living for a while longer. PS4 and 720?, you're going to be what kills your companies.

You know, I love the Playstation service, I've been a PS Plus member for a long ass time, got a Vita, and I mostly use my PS3 and I almost always buy a New game and never used. However, if this shit actually goes through, I will gladly cut off all ties with Playstation and any console using this *bleep*ing patent. Hell, I'll go straight up PC gaming even though I *bleep*ing hate PC gaming...

Hopefully this is just a case of them jumping the gun just in case they ever want it, or to see if it'll even work. Sony can't be dumb enough to bite the hand that feeds them that badly can they? Unfortunately as much as we object there are plenty of people who will still buy it, but GS is still a huge company and they could refuse to carry anything PS4 related. At any rate PC gaming is starting to look better and better.

I don't buy used games very often myself, but most of them are older titles from previous gens anyway. What Sony should be doing instead of trying to lock-out used games is encourage people to buy new. With club Nintendo I've been trying to stick to buying new, not because I have to but rather I just want the coins. A loyalty program would also give them some good press and work well with PS+ maybe even with slightly better rewards (especially for long time subscribers).

I've always thought that all games were going to be completely digital at some point.

I doubt this would be implemented. Before PS3 was released this was rumored to be happening. Then it was rumored that the PS4 would implement this.

Every time this is rumored (or shown that the ability has actually been patented) we get a lot of people just on this site saying how they will refuse to buy the next console.

I don't think Sony will actually be stupid to implement this.

I don't buy all that much second hand games but I still say Sony can get stuffed if they put this in the PS4.

Unclebobert87, Ahh but have Microsoft repeatedly signed patents about it? Not yet.

They'll realise not to. It will hurt their company hard.

Yeah, i understand that, which is why Sony won't do it. They want to make money, but if they do this, they will lose out. Like i said, who will want to buy a console and games when there is a chance of failure which will make your games redundant?

I really miss the way gaming used to be. It seems that ever since the last generation started, gaming has be come more craptastic.. I do woder what other bullshit this upcoming generation is going to bring us, judging by this article, its going to suck.
