Imagine it this way: does Steam allow you to give away or trade your already redeemed games? If anything, Sony wants to create a Steam-like environment on their console, but without giving up the profits that come from retail for console games. The question then is... can Sony really ever compare to the service Steam provides?
They can try, but I have an inkling that's a big fat no.

It's like they want to go out of business.

If Sony uses this tech to block used games, well lets just say they just made my next gen console purchase VERY easy to decide on.

This will just encourage piracy. There is nothing we can do to stop it legitimately because our voices just aren't loud enough amongst the majority children's market who's parents will buy it regardless, if Sony wants to go ahead then they will... But they'll have to come up with something pretty ingenious if they don't want it to be cracked within the first 48 hours by some homeschooled Asian kid with a keyboard and a score to settle.

From the article Ded Valve.

Hmm, this is stupid, Sony's stupid.

Well, considering the rumors were that both the new xbox and Playstation would not support used games, I'll just be playing on the Wii U.

Besides, I still have my PS3 and will still have it even after the new gen come around.

Good luck getting my money, sirs.

Huh? I must have skipped over that somehow.

IF this comes to pass then Steambox all the way baby...not that it wasn't an obvious choice in the first place.

It was either Garrus prequel or Reaper space simulator where you rebuilt after the war. I went with Garrus for all the fangirls.

I call bullshit.

I just don't think Sony are that stupid.
So relax guys, I'm pretty confident it's just a rumour.

Sorry but will Renting be affected by this ? Surely it sort of the same as the rentable disc will be passed around way more people than a pre-owened disk ?

I rent alot of the game I get so this would suck and will put alot of other companies in to trouble

Boyd Nothing official on this from Sony yet, so it could be nothing at all. The tech in this patent, however, would certainly allow them to block the play of rented games as well. That is, if they do end up using it.
