Surprising almost nobody, a retail listing for Tomb Raider popped up with a very clear bullet-point highlighting "a variety of multiplayer modes." Yes, Tomb Raider will have multiplayer. The retail listing, taken from games.co.uk, has since been removed, likely because Square Enix has something planned for a big announcement down the line. Simply put, big multi-platform franchises require multiplayer these days. I'm surprised we didn't hear about this sooner.
The bullet-point in question, taken from a list of exciting features to look forward to, is as follows:
"Survive as a Team: Play a variety of multiplayer modes as Lara’s Shipmates or Yamatai’s Scavengers"
I think I mentioned a while back that I saw Tomb Raider picking up an Uncharted style mutiplayer system. Never mind that Tomb Raider seems to be aping a lot of Uncharted's shtick, it just goes without saying that Uncharted has a solid system that keeps players coming back. At the same time, it's not so complex as to necessitate a lot of resources or post-launch attention.
Still, I'm still curious as to how Tomb Raider will try to monetize its multiplayer. Map packs? Skin packs? Will they implement a Mass Effect 3-esque randomization to loot? Will I actually every play it for more than fifteen minutes?
Keep in mind, until official word comes from Square Enix, this is just a Tomb Rumor. The full game will be released starting March 5, 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, so expect more news soon.
