Paradox announced Arrowhead Game Studios' next game The Showdown Effect earlier this year, even going so far as to let the press check out a pre-alpha build of the game. Since then, we've heard little of the game, but today the 2D competitive action title broke loose. A new trailer has been released, along with a registration form for the upcoming beta, directly stating that if you like Soldat or Super Smash Bros. then you should look out for The Showdown Effect.
While details on the game are scarce, the main point of the title is very simple and pure -- 2D competitive arena mayhem. Fight against other players with a variety of weapons, creating action scenes pulled straight from a movie. Arrowhead's latest trailer focuses on the sort of archetypes that will be battling in The Showdown Effect. Imagine the protagonists from Lethal Weapon, Enter the Dragon, and Looper fighting on the set of The Matrix. That's the game.
Early previews of the game danced around the idea of character customization, including builds for players, essentially allowing each player to make their very own style of hero to fight with. This trailer kind of alludes to pre-constructed characters, which is different than I originally imagined. Either way, the concept and gameplay still seem exciting to me.
The Showdown Effect is currently a PC/Mac exclusive title meant to be played with the keyboard and mouse. Previous experiments with a controller apparently didn't work out like Arrowhead wanted, so at least for now no controller. Sign up for the beta now, and look forward to more information soon.
