Invitations are currently being delivered for a Disney event, where Disney Infinity is set to be officially announced. What's Disney Infinity? Rumors say, and these are the everything but official sorts of rumors, Infinity will be a multi-playform Skylanders competitor, only with everyone's favorite Disney and Pixar characters. Combine that with a robust mobile and online social network and we're talking big money. Look forward to something very interesting.
The event kicks off on January 15 with speaker John Lasseter, CCO of Disney, and John Pleasants, co-president of Disney Interactive, hosting. Invitations come on a box-shaped, lenticular card with the Disney Infinity logo transitioning into an image of the Disney castle. High quality stuff, to be certain.
As far as rumors go, this one is fairly convoluted, to be sure. Disney fan-site Stitch Kingdom posted a story supposedly detailing Disney Infinity, but quickly pulled the news in favor of something less elaborate. Videogamer managed to read through the article before it was pulled and published the details they found particularly interesting. Other gaming news sites then filled in further details, recalling the discussion from last month on a project called Toy Box. Who says all these news sites are unnecessary?
Anyways, the actual game details have to do with connecting Disney characters into a game-world by placing "tokens" on a platform or pedestal similar to what Skylanders uses. What sort of game takes over from that point is still unclear. The info on Toy Box, however, said there will be a robust mobile and social media platform behind the game itself. In other words, a full game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U and handheld titles that comes with the tokens and USB pedestal. Then, likely several social games and hubs to meet up with friends or compare characters.
Watch out for January 15 and Disney Infinity's announcement. If Disney is going to start selling figurines or tokens of some of their biggest movie stars, there's going to be a lot of money behind this project. Expect big things.
