Last night a hacker cracked into the Heroes of Newerth databases and stole an unspecific amount of data. The hacker, who named himself Ryan_HTP, opened a Reddit AMA and also used a prominent HoN livestreamer's account info to take over his Twitter account. Servers have since been brought down and back up, with passwords being reset, but the hacker has made threats that he's aware of numerous exploits.
"I will disclose the vulnerabilities as they patch them. As of right now I have multiple, none patched. I exploited a SQL injection vulnerability to first gain access and download the database, I found more vulnerabilities later on."
S2 Games seems to have a handle on things now, with servers up and running and a mandatory password reset being implemented for all users. While they encourage players to change any passwords that may have been shared with their Newerth account, they seem to believe the intrusion isn't as extensive as the hacker claims.
As far as motive goes, it doesn't really get any more ridiculous than this:
"I hacked HoN because there's nothing as hilarious as seeing a bunch of fanboys of a game get enraged over the fact that their favourite game has been hacked."
For those unaware, Heroes of Newerth is a free-to-play MOBA style game with thousands of players, exclusive to the PC.
