Hiring more for sales and marketing? A typical strategy!! Capitalism is all about bragging through marketing!!! Consumers/citizens usually get lassoed by public relations carried out by corporations at the end of the day.

Surely the thing that attracts people to this are quality articles/footage (or whatever Machinima do, I've not really used it or heard much about it), not having someone just spout out a load of old rubbish about why their's is the best and then having nothing to offer whatsoever.

Personally, wouldn't be surprised if these people decide to take their experience and set up their own company to rival it. Other people have done that haven't they?

Machinima has the largest video game channel on YouTube but on top of that they partner the biggest names on YouTube people that are generating over a billion views a month for them, views Machinima are getting some serious money off of. It doesn't surprise me that Machinima is slowly stopping its original content when they have content providers the World over more than willing to make money for them.

There we go.

I can understand them wanting to hire people for PR, because money, but there wasn't a need to let editors go with the amount they make from others like BlackLabel explains, they could just stop hiring more editors but keep expanding rather then letting some go now, expanding then rehiring.

Machinima has the largest video game channel on YouTube
Aren't they one of the largest channels on all of YouTube, not just gaming wise? From what I know, if you want to "make it" on YT with your gaming videos, you pretty much have to become a partner with Machinima, and they give you a percentage of ad revenue you make, you get the Machinima branding, so with this, I can see why they'd lay off staff and hire on more people in marketing. Why keep on higher paid staff when you can get the same content from people who are willing to make a fraction of the cost?
