What's wrong with the cover art exactly?

The controversy is a combination of the reasonable and the unreasonable: it's unrepresentative of the actual game, and it's too "typical", ie generic rugged white guy with a gun.

I think Ken gave a good enough reason for why they went for the current box art. I can't really blame them and I think fans should be more understanding instead of acting like spoiled children.

Kuje I don't think, at least for the most part... I don't think there's anyone who is saying they won't play the game with its current box art, or that it's a betrayal by Irrational. Nothing so dramatic.

I think people are saying, "People who really want to play this game want good box art, the people that designed this game wants good box art, why can't we have good box art?" and Levine's response of "It's not for us or you, it's for frat-boys and people in marketing who could care less about this game," is just surreal. That's hard to understand for anyone, and it's also making us reflect on the industry a bit... which is always controversial.

If they think this box art will help the game sell better than I'm all for it. Also now that they're actually giving us a second box art with our game everybody wins so hopefully this will be enough to please all the bitching fanboys... I mean no offence but that's what they are.

not enough BLUE and ORANGE.

Lol at some of the reversable covers, they are worse than the main ones. The 3 ones in the article pic are the best and most beautiful although don't really feel like their representative of the game.

Marketability? *bleep* marketability. They pretty much admit that they would devalue their own art for cash appeal.

I suppose the reversible artwork serves as a form of compromise.

I don't know, I'm on the fence with the main box art... It is very generic, but it's also the only time I've ever actually seen Dewitt... Even so, I've never been one to care too much about cover art. Sure if it's amazing, I may love it and stare for a while (I.E. Darksiders II) but if it's average/generic, I'll just pop the game in and hopefully enjoy that.

With that in mind, I am a big fan of reversible covers, and with that being said... I'm loving #4 and #6 the most (mainly because I love Songbirg,) but the vintage style of #4 definitely is the most eye-catching to me.

Numbers 4 and 6 are really awesome and I want a really big poster of both of them.
Just saying.

So wait..... People actuallly bitched about box art?!? Really?!? I couldn't care less what the *bleep*ing box my game sits in looks like, as long as the game is fun to play they could sell it to me in a cardboard box with a picture that looked like a six year old was the artist. Honestly gamers are probably the largest group of whiners I have ever *bleep*ing seen. "I don't like your decision! CHANGE IT CHANGE IT CHANGE IT!" Honestly does the gaming community need its baba? Its blanky? Time for a nap?

I like the fact that the cover is leaning more towards realism, which contrasts the in-game stylised graphics. I don't see why there would be a fan uproar, but at the same time I can see the point when people say it is a bit generic. Ken Levine's explanation behind it equating to "MAN WITH BIG GUN! FIRE! AMERICAN FLAG! I MUST BUY THIS GAME!", but at the same time I have to give Levine credit for giving us the option of different covers.

I understand it perfectly. Like he says, they spend big bucks on marketing campaigns and trailers and demos and all that jazz, but there's a whole wealth of gamers out there who will never see it. Making the box art appeal to them is super cheap and easy, and will sell games.

That's just it. The hardcore gamers want it all. We aren't their soul source of revenue, despite how passionate we may be.

Besides, it's not bad box art, it just doesn't quite show the depth of the game.
