A dozen Tomb Raider screenshots from Square Enix showing off Lara's grit and gumption
How could anyone survive this junk?
Lara Croft is in the thick of it in the 2013 Tomb Raider remake, and the dozen screenshots released today from Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix certainly don't paint a prettier picture. In one of the images Lara's leg is quite literally being chewed on a very angry looking wolf, which when considered with her previous injuries -- including being stabbed through the abdomen by a piece of rebar -- makes you wonder how she's still getting around. Tomb Raider is certainly an action game, above anything else.
In each of the dozen images we see Lara Croft battling it out with the island's malicious inhabitants. Lara wields an assortment of weapons, including her trusty bow and arrow, a torch, and a "WW2 Pistol" that can be upgraded with hair trigger modifications. At some point she must have dropped the torch, because everything seems to be on fire in the background. Slather everything in a thick layer of dirt and set the weather to raining and grit seems to be the word of the day.
If I had one complaint about the images, it's that Lara Croft's model seems to be very high quality -- which in most cases isn't a bad thing at all. It's just in this case, when compared to the backgrounds of some environments, well, Lara seems to be hoarding some of the resources. Higher resolution textures, modeling and animations (as best you can tell from 2D images), I almost think Lara is too well crafted and it creates dissonance with the rest of the game. Perhaps in motion things will smooth out.
Lara Croft will be starring in Tomb Raider, to be released March 5, 2013 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Expect the media campaign to pick up in the coming months.

....God it's like I'm not even trying to make bad puns anymore. That said I'm on the fence on this game, on one hand it seems like a glorious survival game of how Lara becomes the badass by overcoming overwhelming adversity, on the other hand REGENERATING HEALTH DERP! And possible linearity. Ah hell, who am I kidding, give me a worthwhile special edition and youve got yourself a pre-order squeenix.
