Phones are a far larger market than video game consoles, so comparing raw numbers is apples and oranges. You have to balance what you can reasonable produce with what you can reasonably sell to avoid too much stock at retailers and too much money spent building too many consoles.
I see what you did there... Apples and oranges!

It tough to gauge how consumers will react to a new console. The market is growing, but it's also tighter too, so I've got to give Nintendo some credit for releasing their next unit well-ahead of the competition, while trying something different.

I have faith in this one after reading what the company plans to do this cycle -- more now, after experiencing the steps they've already taken to achieve said goals firsthand.

I know phones are a larger market, but they would still be capable of moving larger inventories than established. If they pull the same BS as they did with the Wii they will have lost my interest as that was awful to witness even though I got one easily. And no shit you can't overproduce, that's common sense. But under producing to create an artificial demand for a product is bad too. Yes, the demand is high, but it will seem higher because they do this, thus actually having potential to push people away who can't get one who may be borderline.

It still doesn't make any sense for them to artificially create such a demand for it other than for it to look like a successful launch. Apple and Samsung can release flagship smartphones to millions of sales within their first week, but Nintendo still fails at the 1 million mark for a console? That is ridiculous in this day and age.

There is loads of other things you can do too.

A lot of those other things don't really interest me right now. Maybe they will when I finally get a Wii U. But they don't right now.

I was at Wal-Mart last week on Thursday and they had three copies of the Wii U left. I was kind of tempted to get one but I really want to get the Deluxe one instead. But I'm trying to hold off until Pikmin 3 comes out because I know I will only play NSMBU if I get it now. ;_;

I would say get the deluxe for sure. Might want to get it as soon as you see it though.

Was at walmart on Sunday, saw two Baisic versions on the shelf there. Im just glad I got my Deluxe version back on launch. When the new PS/Xbox are announced ill be sure to preorder them too. Im just bored of my Wii U... NSMBU was the only game at launch that intrested me, and well it gets boring fast. I just want my 3rd person open world mario game, mario kart, and the next Zelda....

The Best Buy near me was sold out of both versions. Futureshop was sold out of the deluxe verison but had about 4 of the basics in stock still. This was last week when I went to check.

The Wii U is not just for the typical third party games anymore.They stated that it was going to have a console library especially for "hardcore" gamers.

Someone made up the number doesn't necessarily mean we have to believe it...
The number comes from Nintendo themselves.
They could, in theory, be lying, of course. But that would be far too risky to be worth it. What do they gain by lying? Making people think the Wii U is selling moderately better than it actually is, perhaps? But if there were discovered to be lying then they would very likely be sued for a lot of money by various investors, not to mention a general drop in confidence in them and thus a drop in share prices.
