Grand Theft Auto 5's three protagonists revealed on Game Informer's December cover
With their leather satchels and business casual attire
The December issue of Game Informer has revealed a Grand Theft Auto V surprise that may leave a few fans wondering what just happened. Rather than a single protagonist like Claude, Tommy Vercetti, CJ or Nico Bellic, GTA5 will share the lead role between three different characters. All of the promo art featuring multiple characters, the accent in the original trailer, it all makes sense now. Simply put, Los Santos, or "the biggest open world Rockstar has created to date," has enough room for three intertwined stories.
Other leaks mention that at least one of the three is an "east coast gangster" trying to get a fresh start, but being unable to find it. Whether that backstory fits the narrative in GTA5's first trailer, or implies that all three have moved to Los Santos for different reasons, only Rockstar knows. Maybe we'll find out on November 14 when the second trailer is released.
Grand Theft Auto V is currently announced for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, no PC reveal yet, and is scheduled for a spring 2013 release. Might I just add they all look like middle-age dads on the verge of snapping and becoming psychopaths? Yeah, this three protagonist thing might just work out fine.

The fact that you'll be doing epic missions WITH them, and switching between them if you want is just genius. Sniper or in the middle of things? Helicopter pilot or shooting at chasing helicopters from the back of it? I can really see R* having great camaraderie between the three.
I was simmering with excitement after the first trailer but now I've boiled over.
Imagine that map.
PEStar say whaaaat? is that legit?
PEStar I'm searching around but can't find the thread, I'd love to see a bigger version of that. I love seeing fan mash-ups of maps.
Please, someone confirm if that map is real or not.
I'm a bit worried about the 3 protagonists. It sounds really good, but in other games (such as GTA IV), having someone shooting by your side was always the worst part. They were always shit at it, they'd get killed when it wasn't your fault, and you'd fail. Imagine that, but in every single mission. Sure, they'll try to balance that aspect out, but later in the game it's going to get more difficult, and you're going to have to rely on one of the three to shoot some people, or drive while you shoot. And they're gunna fail.
And if they are really good at it, you could just pick the guy with the easy role and let the other two do the work. And R* won't want to let you do that.
One way or another, it's going to be frustrating lugging around two NPCs.
If all three are going to be doing their own thing at a time, chances are the AI's going to be great, so you really shouldn't have to worry about them on missions.
