Witcher author says games aren't true series installments
Andrzej Sapkowski rejects notion of game sequels to books
If you're a Witcher fan, you may be interested to know what the author of the books -- Andrzej Sapkowski -- thinks about the video game installments. Turns out, not much.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Sapkowski has no issues praising the games as fine works in their own right, but as far as them being "true" installments in the Witcher universe, he scoffs at the notion.
"'The Witcher' is a well made video game, its success is well deserved and the creators deserve all the splendour and honour due," he says. "But in no way can it be considered to be an 'alternative version', nor a 'sequel' to the witcher Geralt stories. Because this can only be told by Geralt's creator. A certain Andrzej Sapkowski."
"It is the book that's the original, this book is the result of the author's unique, inimitable talent," he continued. "'Transfer a book into a virtual world'? Funny. It's impossible."
Going even further, Sapkowski says games absolutely should not serve as an accompaniment to novels.
"I realise that current times accustom us - which I find terrible - to the strange convergence of media and the freedom of mixing them. To me as a writer, the idea to write 'adjuvant content' and create something 'complementary' to a game or a comic is an absolute pinnacle of idiocy."
It's important to note the author doesn't play video games, but says he does admire them, in a way.

If he doesn't want the games to be canon, that's fine. That's his right. The way he presents it though?
I've rarely read such self-aggrandizing statements in my life. "the author's unique, inimitable talents" "a certain [enter name here]" Yeah you can only get away with saying that when you're not talking about YOURSELF!
"Transfer a book into a virtual world? Funny,. It's impossible." I'm not sure what's bigger, this guy's ego, or his mouth.
Now, maybe this is a lost in translation problem, that's been known to happen before. Maybe if he gave the interview in Polish it would sound better.
But speaking in the third person? " this can only be told by Geralt's creator. A certain Andrzej Sapkowski."
Claiming it can only be done with your specific ability? "this book is the result of the author's unique, inimitable talent,"
Claiming complementary media is "a pinnacle of idiocy," and mixing and converging media is "terrible?"
I have no problem with his stance. If he wants the Witcher games to be non-canon. That's fine. I can even understand the stance against cross media stories. But the way he says it here just sounds incredibly pompous.
Again, maybe it's a translation thing, but this sounds more like some one who thinks a little too fond of himself. You're a writer, buddy, not Ghandi.
Especially since that idiocy got him extra money and more global recognition.
There is a very verifiable shit hierarchy, where "older" forms of media crap and those that are "below" (newer) have to take the shit. Literary types thing they are better than cinema lovers, who think they are better than video gamers. Even us, hardcore gamers, think we're better than casual gamers. It just happens.
Don't let what that guy says get to you, though. If he doesn't play games, then his opinion matters as much as film critic Roger Ebert saying that games will never be an art form.
But whether the man likes it or not, CD Projekt is makin bank off his creation in a very new-age way lol
Not to be completely negative, I do like the world Sapkowski had created and how he meshes modern fantasy and classic fairy tales in this world.
