The difficulty in playing commercial games is a major barrier for quite a few people in adopting Linux as a full-time desktop solution. As Microsoft continues to take Windows in the direction of Apple and makes it an even more closed, MS-centric platform I think more and more people will be receptive to switching to Linux to claim back control of their personal computing from the major vendors who seem hell bent on locking you in to their version of computing. Bringing gaming to Linux can only serve to accentuate this as it broadens its appeal.

There are more important issues at play that harm open platform adoption though such as MS's close relationship with OEMs and the education system essentially creating MS customers for life as children are rarely even made aware that other OSes exist outside of Windows. MS has achieved this with heavily discounted software for schools and things like the "Microsoft Academy" program that has essentially made MS products centric to the entire computing/IT curriculum. This really is the tip of the iceberg.

Microsoft: Brilliant Marketing Geniuses.

I wouldn't be against Linux being "the thing" for gaming, I run Win7 at the moment and am quite happy with it, but a free OS? One run specifically to work, rather than turn profit? Sure sign me up. If the rule of odds for Windows doesn't hold with Windows 9 and it's terrible, maybe more people will end up switching and Linux Steam will be more of a thing by then. While nobody really liked Vista, the majority just stayed with XP until Win7 came out, and just skipped it, which could also happen with Win8 pretty easily...I think?
