Microsoft reportedly dropping Windows Live Messenger in favor of Skype
Company slowly making the transition over several months
Hope you're not too attached to Microsoft's native IM client, because reports are saying that the company is phasing out Windows Live Messenger in favor of Skype. Several unnamed sources have stated that Microsoft is planning to retire their messaging service, instead replacing it with Skype integration.
Over the last several months, Microsoft has already begun merging the two systems, to a point where 80 percent of instant messages sent through Skype now utilize Messenger's systems.
While Microsoft hasn't issued a comment over the news, official word is expected to come soon, perhaps within the next few weeks. Users can already link their Microsoft accounts to Skype, with Skype 6.0 for Mac and Windows, which offers the option to log in using either your Microsoft or Facebook credentials.
Thanks for the tip, Avalith!

I got the email about the merge yesterday and decided to go ahead and merge my msn and skype accounts. The email said it would be quick and easy, it was anything but.
I've had my MSN messenger account for about 6 or 7 years. I've added and removed a lot of contacts in that period. When I merged them and signed into skype, it added back about 20 contacts I had removed. I spent some time and went through it and cleaned it all out. Then signed in on another computer AND THEY WERE ALL ADDED BACK.
I also can not block any MSN contacts. I'm also getting random notifications of new conversations. Conversations that I had the day before.
I'm also having a lot more random problems and issues. For as long as skype and MSN have been out, you would think they could have a good working chat program.
*cough* The Slayer *cough*
I will miss MSN though.
Amazing that you can find real info from all the issues that are currently facing those who made the merge/mess
It does not tell you when you install skype that it is going to cripple other live services and KILL the original messenger.
nor does it tell you you wont have groups eg. family friends, co workers or whatever you set up in msn live.
even if you dont mind the merge you may not get ALL you contacts back or they may show incorrectly online / offline
Skype also says now that you should NOT use it over Wi-Fi which I have done in the past with no issues and which works even better with MSN
Microsoft bought skype and ruined it and are now forcing it (warts an all) on us all.
Lucky for me there are plenty of replacements that I cna use other than skype inc Magic jack for both Iphone and android and many other IM replacements.
Microsoft dropped the ball here and I am holding onto what I have for the moment after removing skype from my systems.
Heh.
Here's hoping Microsoft is going to drop internet explorer in favor of Firefox.
Skype is better for group chats anyways, because you're still in the group even if you sign off. You can favorite or/put it in your contacts list and yeah, if it's active it would pop right up anyways. But yeah if you're in a group of people you wouldn't want to private message them unless it IS something private anyways, and the one on one chat is meh.
But yeah MSN is definitely better for one on one convos and those fun group convos too sometimes. I don't know it has it's perks too, and I've had a lot of good times on MSN. I remember when I thought AIM was better than MSN when people told me to get it in like 2006, then I got it and I was like "lol I'm *bleep*ing stupid, this is way better". Well I hope Skype gets updated where you can use custom smileys and stuff, because MSN also has that over Skype too, and you don't have to pay for any bullshit either. There may be a premium WIndows Live thing, but nobody would care to get that.
Sakuraba Neku told me you can sign in with your MSN account, but it's still not the same. I already have a Skype account with like 20+ contacts on it anyways too. But I'd use both if I'd had to, or switch people over to my MSN one. I hope they alert us about it when we sign onto MSN one day. So if people want to download Skype they can. I know someone who is always on MSN but not Skype, so I guess that will change. R.I.P. MSN.
Edit: He also just told me you can merge your MSN account with your Skype account and have contacts from both, woooooo!
Alternatively, *bleep*.
