Dota 2's first official holiday event has begun, devouring the Halloween spirit whole and producing a little something Valve calls Diretide. Breaking it down, Diretide adds a special holiday event map, four new armor sets to unlock, Diretide chests and keys with the chance to acquire a Baby Roshan courier, and a meta event to unlock a customizable Greevil courier. In other words, a Valve holiday event that delivers plenty of exciting content for fans new and old.
To detail the event map a little more, since it's really the heart of the Halloween event, here's what "The Rosh'ning" is all about. Here's a quick sing-song summary from the announcement:
"While Roshan roams through endless night, heroes fill their coffers with sweet delight, each team racing to collect more taffy than the other...until Roshan catches their scent! And then, like a scaly, winged, downright epic version of the neighborhood bully, Roshan will let no puny heroes stand between him and his taffy."
From there, Roshan will eventually fill up on candy and the event's grand finale will begin. At that point both teams (go co-op) will need to group up to bring the "Sugar Frenzy" Roshan down. I haven't given it a spin yet, but the action is said to be frantic and plenty of fun without being ridiculously difficult.
Which leaves one things: the prizes! Players who defeat the holiday Roshan event will pick up a Greevil egg, a meta object that requires a second dropped item to hatch -- essences. By combining various essences in the egg, the Greevil courier that will eventually hatch after the event becomes customized in different ways. (Guide, Greevils) It's rumored these Greevil couriers will then be customizable with items (hats, clothes, etc) at a future date.
The Diretide chests will drop like normal random chest drops, and keys will be purchasable from the Dota 2 store along with the new skin sets for Anti Mage, Windrunner, Death Prophet and Invoker. Basically, Valve just wants to encourage folk to play more Dota 2, which at this point of time is exactly what I want to do.
