Mabinogi received its "Classic Update" today, and with all the usual MMO fare comes the addition of something a little more unusual: same-sex marriage.
The update was announced earlier this month, and introduces a new Puppeteer talent, a Talent System, the Bone Dragon mount, and gay marriage.
Puppeteer players can now summon the Pierrot and Colossus, while the new Talent System replaces the former destiny system for more specialized training and higher stats. The Bone Dragon, well, seems terribly appropriate for Halloween.
Interestingly, the addition of same-sex marriages to Mabinogi is restricted to regions overseen by Nexon America, which excludes Asia and other territories outside North America. Since the game's launch in 2008, over 67,000 in-game marriages have been held, and the suggestion to extend the option to same-sex characters actually comes directly from the community.
Nexon America's Mabinogi producer Teddy Kim remarked:
“When players speak out about specific content, we do our best to deliver. That is the great thing about Mabinogi; it allows players fully immerse themselves in the lives they take on in-game. Players can get married, fight dragons, become musicians or learn to cook. We think that opening up the wedding system to same gender characters is fully in the spirit of offering nearly limitless options to our players.”
