Who actually uses Facebook and Twitter on the Xbox LIVE dashboard? Well, if you answered "Me!" then prepare to be disappointed. After the update this week, both social network apps were removed from the download list, even though Microsoft had given no indication beforehand that they'd be dropping either.
What the new dash does have, however, is Internet Explorer, which allows users to pin the social network sites to their dashboard. According to a statement issued by a Microsoft spokesperson, the company hopes that this switcharoo will encourage more users to use the in-dash browser.
"We are retiring the Facebook and Twitter apps. Xbox LIVE subscribers will have the ability to access these sites through Internet Explorer on Xbox, available through the Web Hub located on the new dashboard."
Note that the Facebook app can still be launched from "My Apps" if you already had it downloaded. The Twitter app, on the other hand, was entirely web-based.
This week's update has so far reached approximately three million consoles in a "pre-launch" phase. The official release is expected next week, on October 23.
