You said it, man. I doubt the future holds nothing but multi-player games. Just because a single player game has a few aspects like coop or online ratings doesn't mean 1P days are over.

...and pirating is just something that devs have to adapt to and mitigate as best they can. I don't believe it is such a crushing blow that it will destroy the future of single player games.

I don't think game titles such as the Elder Scrolls will die anytime soon...

Meanwhile on a distant planet, I continue to enjoy Dustforce, Wizorb, Skyrim, Cortex Command, and Binding of Isaac.

As for AAA titles that just just didn't have multiplayer, how about:
  1. Skyrim
  2. Just Cause 2
  3. Deus Ex HR
And of course there's also the examples to bring up of games that were worse because of the addition such as Orcs Must Die 2, and arguably Mass Effect 3.

Lorx Keep in mind he's also referring to games with asynchronous multiplayer or some aspect of socialization, even if it's something at minor as leaderboards.

So...Dustforce/Cortex Command? Unless Achievements are also being brought into this, but at least from personal experience, I went off and did every achievement in DEHR not because I wanted to check my stats on Steam, but because those are personal achievements, proving to myself I am capable of whatever feat was laid in front of me by the game (in contrast to feats put out by other players).

Lorx You know, I'm not sure if Achievements or Trophies qualify. I'd say "no," just because you don't actually need to be connected to anything to earn/view them. Being able to share is just a bonus.

Still, saying achievements are a multiplayer thing because they are shown online is rather weird considering you can add achievements in an offline game anyway (xbox 360 offline for example). Also, if he is saying you can't make a singleplayer game and not have some social stuff built around it.. well it's natural people are going to want to share their experience. However, I doubt singleplayer games will die out because gamers still want those games and people don't change all that much all of a sudden. Clothes people worn in the past are still considered pretty, music from the past is considered nice to listen to.. same is with games. The big difference here is that graphics get old but still, nothing you can't work with. It's not the first time a developer says something like this, does not make it fact.

Agreed, Single Player game with social aspects != Multiplayer game.

I don't see single player games going anywhere anytime soon, what I do see is we will probably see a lot more network integration like with spotpass or miiverse. If you look at some of the most popular games a good chunk are at least primarily single player. Assassin's Creed, Elderscrolls, Mario, Zelda, and so on are all still going strong. Anyone else find it funny that its someone from Blizzard thats playing the doomed card?

I'm not sure how it works for games but Movie services like Netflix usually have to strike deals and pay studios out the wazoo for their movies. I can't see rentals being any worse than the second hand market.

people keep pushing for more multiplayer, but single player games often have the better experience, like skyrim or just to go out on a limb here, dwarf fortress.

I think that was common sense even years ago, people have been saying this for a long time and its true, the shift occuring all the time with more and more AAA games that need an internet connection to play.
