Reggie Fils-Aime announces Nintendo TVii, a Wii U feature tying the console to the TV
All of your favorite services in one place
Reggie's second big announcement during the Nintendo Wii U event today was the announcement of Nintendo TVii. Nintendo TVii is a a feature of the Wii U that ties in all of a person's television and movie services and subscriptions to the Wii U. Essentially, it's a browser on the Wii U GamePad with sections for "Favorites," "TV," "Movies," and "Sports." These sections are filled with corresponding content pulled directly from the services the user is signed up with.
For example, services that were shown during the demo included Netflix, HuluPlus, Amazon and just standard television. The movie and television sections were much like a Netflix browser, with profiles for each show episode and movie available at the press of a GamePad touchscreen button. The Sports section was similar, except it had live scores and game information for a user to browse. On top of the TV, Movie and Sports sections, Wii TV has extensive favoriting and user profile settings, but that's not all. While watching a television program or movie, the Wii U GamePad will show live status updates, trivia, and related news for a user to browse and interact with.
Nintendo TVii will come free of charge with all consoles and won't require a subscription to use. The Wii U, with its new GamePad technology, had to deliver on its promises for tying the console and the television together, and TVii looks like it delivers.
