Guild Wars 2 has been out for nigh on two weeks now and due to an overwhelming launch population ArenaNet has had to stutter and slow their media campaign. Today, though, things kicked back into gear with the release of the official Guild Wars 2 launch trailer, but it's a little different than you'd expect. Rather than 100% gameplay, the trailer focuses on live-action, symbolic scenes and wraps up with in-game footage.
The trailer features several live-action scenes, each symbolizing various statements towards the industry in general, rather than about Guild Wars 2. A man watching television while encased in clay, reaching out; a graffiti artist who goes from painting a wall to painting on the air itself; a crowd gathers around a pit of hot coals and a man steps out and walks upon them barefooted; a woman in a thin red dress swims through an underwater, modern sitting room, coming out of the water and transforming into an in-game character in a different world -- the world of Tyria.
There are several clear messages to be taken from the trailer -- break the mold, the inspiration behind Guild Wars 2 in within us, rebel against the establishment, make your own rules, challenge yourself, stand out in a crowd, explore your imagination -- it all awaits in the world of Guild Wars 2. Of course, there are more meta meanings as well, such as Guild Wars 2's escape from the subscription model. Honestly, there are many meanings to behold and each likely dependent on the viewers gaming and MMO background. It's rather stunning, if unconventional, though a bit silly at the same time.
Guild Wars 2 is available now, having reopened digital sales on the game's own website, and requires no subscription to play.
