It was done with SDK 2007!!! For a 5 year old version of the engine, the devs really outdid themselves and made source look amazing!

All mods running a source engine have needed that to run. Unless they managed to work their way around it. If so that's really odd but we'll see what happens.

I believe they untied it from HL2, but I'm not 100% sure I remember that right.

Yeah, you don't need HL2 to play it. You actually only need to download the Source SDK 2007. It's free on Steam in the section "Tools". If you install a source game like HL2, it'll install SDK 2007 as well but you don't need to buy any source game for this mod.
