Through the power of brand licensing, Japan has ensured it will never escape the clutches of Hatsune Miku and the rest of her Vocaloid crew. Miku's mojo in the business of licensed video games is stronger than ever, as Sega's Hatsune Miku Project DIVA-f for the PlayStation Vita not only topped software charts in Japan last week, but triggered a welcome surge in weekly Vita hardware sales as well.
Hardware sales for the Vita picked up serious steam during the week ended September 2nd, 2012, hitting 50,070 units compared to the 10,880 Vitas sold just the week before. This boost in Vita sales has been attributed to the strong retail reception for Hatsune Miku Project DIVA-f, which coincidentally launched last week.

Maintaining the momentum will be the real challenge and despite Hatsune Miku Project DIVA-f's launch week sales of over 150,000 units, Sega remains cautiously optimistic about the future of Miku on Vita. Team Project DIVA admitted via Twitter that Hatsune Miku Project DIVA-f's development costs were still quite high and judging from the current sales trend, it may be hard for Sega to justify producing a sequel for the rhythm title at the moment.
Given the investment Sega has made in getting Miku on the Vita, the publisher will continue to push and promote Hatsune Miku Project DIVA-f in an effort to ultimately make it the top-selling Vita title for 2012.
