Good news for everyone planning to pick up a copy of Torchlight II, as Runic Games has confirmed Steam Workshop support. Runic president Travis Baldree made the announcement during PAX Prime, and said "there was no reason not to" include it.
This is welcome news to be sure, as Steam Workshop is an incredibly easy way to find and install mods. Mod tools for Torchlight II should arrive soon after launch, and Runic will release some of its own mods to help get the ball rolling. Baldree hinted he may add cursed weapons back into the game, since those are something he loves but no one else at Runic was keen on. Custom armor sets and items should be easier to create than before, due to changes Runic made to how they are sized on the characters.
Along with some of Runic's own mods, the studio is planning to release free content about once a month "to remind people we're still around," according to Baldree. Steam will automatically download the content whenever the game is launched, which is nice to see. The free content may be anything from events to item sets, depending on what Baldree and the team at Runic feel like releasing. Random surprises for an addicting action-RPG? Yes, please!
Anyone who played the original Torchlight and went looking for mods knows the hassle of trying to get everything working. There are several third-party mod managers to make the task easier, but still, it is not something to look forward to just to mod the game. All of that will disappear once Torchlight II arrives, which is just one more reason to add this game to your must-have list come September 20.
