Obviously pc gaming hardware is already capable of higher resolution, but on a console I'd much rather have 60fps 1080p than - 30fps at 4k.
I agree.. Personally I only want Sony to stick in a GPU capable of next gen graphics at higher than 1080p, just so that the games running at 1080p have so much power to work with frame drops should be a rarity and so should screen tearing as well. It's like the Playstation 3 in that regard, they gave it the power to render games at 1080p and some games did like Gran Turismo 5 but most developers opted for 720p so they could make the games ever prettier.

I definitely don't see that resolution happening for at least a decade.

Yeah Sony is on board with blu-ray, but you know who isn't? Cable and satellite providers. Very few broadcast at 1080p, and even then, the compression used when sending the signal can easily kill most of the benefit of a higher resolution.

Obviously pc gaming hardware is already capable of higher resolution, but on a console I'd much rather have 60fps 1080p than - 30fps at 4k.

Thats quite a leap there, a rather costly leap. I don't see that sorta resolution becoming a standard for a long time and is just an enthusiast's product now. Or at least I hope so for Nintendo's sake, otherwise they could fall behind again.

Fair enough. I would personally shoot for 2015. Technology growth at the moment is ridiculous and is only set to rise even further. It will be cool to see how it all develops over the coming years. Also interesting to see what step they take for downsizing the technology. Perhaps something along the same lines as what Apple has done with the retina display?

Looking forward to having resolution's this high in the home.

What makes you say that?
4K is just too expensive.. LG are launching their new 4K TV in September for $22,000. If you want a home cinema projector than Sony do one at 4K resolution for $26,000..

Granted the price will come down over time, but I don't see technology that is priced at $22,000 right now being under $2000 and affordable for regular people in a year or two, this is something that will take 3-4 years which would take us to 2016.

They will need to future proof the next gen consoles, as I remember reading they are well on their way with the next generation of "Super HD" TV's. They showcased one at the 2012 London Olympics.

BlackLabel - I too would like to know whether it's going to be video playback, or if the developers plan on doing games in that resolution. With hardware advancing even quicker then when the PS3 was developed, I wonder what they will do to future proof the console.

Wait. Is that the actual ps4 or os it just speculation?

It's a nice feature, will make the system rather future proofed given it's going to take a while before 4K screens become affordable. I am assuming 4K will merely be for movie playback as if they had a GPU in this thing capable of running games at graphics we expect now at 4K then the console will be a beast, an expensive beast. That said I wouldn't mind them trying to aim for a GPU that can run today's graphics at a higher than 1080p resolution, that way when developers only use it for 1080p they have a lot of horsepower to work with.
