Games industry needs to grow up, says Heavy Rain creator
Industry suffers from the "Peter Pan syndrome"
Heavy Rain creator David Cage has said the games industry needs to "grow up."
The Quantic Dream co-founder believes what the industry needs most now is to take more risks, citing first person shooters as a prime example of the genre that's overpopulated.
"I think we should have more courage in our industry and take more risks, because I think this is what the industry needs now. I mean, how many first person shooters can you make? How many monsters/aliens/zombies can you kill in games? There's a moment where we need to grow up. We need to grow up."
Cage added that that the industry suffers from the "Peter Pan syndrome", but now is the right time to grow.
"I often think that the industry suffers of the Peter Pan syndrome. It's the fact that we don't want to grow up, so we stay kids. But there is a moment where you need to grow up as an industry. And you cannot keep up with the Peter Pan syndrome. You need to grow. And I think this is the right time."
The designer had previously discussed similar comments when he said that the games industry will die without innovation. Meanwhile, his next game Beyond: Two Souls is aiming to deliver meaning over fun. The PlayStation 3 exclusive is due for a release sometime during 2013.

I agree that I would love to see the industry "man-up" and take more creative risks. Let's not rest on our laurels!
I forget who said it, but the only people that worry about being "adult" are children, truly mature people need not worry about that kind of stuff. The idea that you have to remove the fun from a game to be more "adult" and "mature" is the same reaction that a adolescent has to anything they perceive as "for babies" is just plain stupid. I really, really hate the notion that things of meaning have to be devoid of entertainment that we see in a lot of modern art and literature nowadays. Shakespeare's plays have a great depth of meaning, but still are enjoyable to watch or read, Beethoven's symphonies are both moving and enjoyable to listen to, why can't great games be both fun to play and have deep, lasting messages.
bro its a game if its not fun to play why play it
That being said Why do games need to have either meaning or fun, not both? MGS is a fun, enjoyable game that still manages to be meaningful and though provoking despite its cheesy-bness. Why does changing/innovating=boring?
