Uh, which Nintendo franchises are released annually? The only one I can think of was Mario Party back in the Gamecube days. I guess they count every game with Mario as the same franchise, regardless of platform or genre? Most Nintendo franchises are lucky to get two entries through an entire console generation.

I also don't get the point with the story comments. I know I don't play every game out there, but from what I've seen their are plenty of nonsensical stories and plenty of great stories on both sides. I know some JRPGs can get really complex overall, but when you consider some of these games go for 50-100+ hours you have to expect that a lot has to go on and complexities will arise. It's like getting made at comics for having confusing continuity and ignoring that the stories in them have been running for literal decades.

I don't think Bayonetta is the fairest example to have used. I agree that Bayonetta is senseless gibberish but it's not indicative of Japanese games as a whole. But then I have a feeling Hutchinson knows this but deliberately used Bayonetta because it fit his point.

I think some of the comments are a little dramatic. Racism was probably a bad word to use, but all I see is a gamer who's venting a bit. We've all seen it enough times here on Neo I assume, and he was asked for his opinion. The guy obviously isn't happy that a game like Bayonetta gets praised while GoW (which he obviously likes) gets criticised.
But I do think he makes a good point. I agree that if a japanese dev makes a game with a whacky storyline, critics will probably be more... forgiving(?) than if a western developer made it. It all goes back to that popular internet saying - "Only in Japan".

JacqueseVonRIP What, you mean you don't want to face God only to learn God is yourself and then kill God so you can be God and take fate into your own hands except this entire phenomenon is part of an endless cycle older than time? Huh, huh?

Not going to mention what game that's from, 'cause spoilers.

Although this kind of relates to my thoughts on Mass Effect 3. You mentioned people wouldn't be as forgiving toward a Western developer who decided to go crazy with the story/ending? Possibly true. Look at Mass Effect 3's ending. Very JRPG in style, if you think about it... and gamers RAGED.

Killer 7 was an amazing game, but its story was largely incoherent... But that was part of the fun. I mean, if you look at a lot of japanese games, theyre kinda ridiculous, so a retarded story is more acceptable. Gears of war wasnt as ridiculous, and its story reflected that.

And is a ridiculous story easier to writer? Often yes (realize youve developed a major plot hole? Boom - make some fairy appear and do something to recify it). When your game isnt rooted in the hyper fantastical, (red dead redemption) you impose more creative limits on yourself and a good story takes much more effort and finesse. Sounds like homie just doesnt like being spoken of in the same breath as many japanese games because he thinks theyre of a lower integrity. Sometimes they are. Gears is a shit example though.

Saw someone wrote the west churns out a ton of carbon copies and japanese games are an artform. Both are true, but lets be honest: when its comes to 75% of japanese games, they use the same stock characters over and over and over again. You can guess how the animals will look / behave. You can guess how many of the characters will be dressed. You can guess the style of the art direction. Etc etc etc

Actually the cycle isn't endless, you need to defeat god without becoming god yourself in order to elect a new god which is nothingness which means chaos which means no life so your only choice is to become god until one day you encounter a person who can destroy and create god at the same time but that person has never come in a million+ years of fighting god.

...I need to go lie down.

I can think of 2 games that might be, but can you PM me what it is?

Also, I'd like to point out that when I use the word "forgiving", I'm using it for lack of a better word - at least one I could think of at the time.

But we haven't even begun to discuss why your loyal and faithful but soulless companion suddenly transforms into you at the end and takes your love interest!

Gah my brain is swirling, I think I will grab that ice pack.

Ded Valve SHH. SHHH. Quentin did NOT suddenly wake up on the beach in MY body, thank you very much. 'Cause that's just *bleep*ing weird. And probably rather traumatic for him (particularly after witnessing my suicide).

I kinda see his point. After all alot of what comes out of Japan tends to be sorta weird but the difference is we expect that so we're more forgiving where as with the west we expect a more saving private Ryan or Lord of the Ring type story. Mind you its positive racism but racism non the less. Not that all games are played for the story. Don't know about you guys but I certainly don't play Mario for the deep, though provoking story.

But the same can be said for alot of things. How many times have a plot hole been explained by friendship, love, or some other common theme?

Not gonna spoil it but are you guys talking about a certain Capcom game?

If anything, Asian games have a lot of this stuff too. And as a feminist, I have a bigger beef with Asian (not just Japanese) games than Western.

Not sure if Hutchinson is American or Canadian. He went to college in Australia too. Guy's all over the place. It may also be worth pointing out that a number of larger Japanese publishers are going out of their way to cater to Western markets, simply because it's a bigger market than Japan. S'where the money's at.

Ded Valve At least you didn't have Blondie McTits forced on you by the campfire. I felt so violated.
