Assassin's Creed 3 creative director dismisses Bayonetta, Japanese games as "literally gibberish"
"There's a subtle racism ... where Japanese developers are forgiven for doing what they do"
Alex Hutchinson, creative director of Assassin's Creed 3, provided an eye-opening and candid interview with CVG recently. When provided a question on Nintendo's success with annual franchises when compared to that of Assassin's Creed, Hutchinson provides a potentially inflammatory response... he blames a "subtle racism" at work.
"You want my real answer? I think there's a subtle racism in the business, especially on the journalists' side, where Japanese developers are forgiven for doing what they do. I think it's condescending to do this."
The interviewer follows up with with a similar question to what's on my mind: "Seriously?" Hutchinson extrapolates:
"Yeah. Just think about how many Japanese games are released where their stories are literally gibberish. Literally gibberish. There's no way you could write it with a straight face, and the journalists say 'oh it is brilliant'. Then Gears of War comes out and apparently it's the worst written narrative in a game ever. I'll take Gears of War over Bayonetta any time. It's patronising to say, 'oh those Japanese stories, they don't really mean what they're doing.' "
As the conversation shifted, Hutchinson admitted he was pleased with the positive response gamers have given Assassin's Creed's story.
Assassin's Creed 3 will release October 30 for Xbox 360 and PS3, and November 20 for PC gamers. Assassin's Creed is the near-future story of Desmond, who uses the Animus device to travel back into past lives in effort to support his cause in the endless war between Templar and Assassin. In his visits into the past Desmond is communicated to by aliens, talking into the future by using Desmond's ancestors as conduits, warning Desmond of the end of days.

Bayonetta > Gears, anyday!
His example would have been much better if he used Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts which needlessly complicates the story to the point where it's just not worth it anymore. Bayonetta was never about the riveting story with deep characters and a plot twist that'll make you sit down and truly think in a deep philosophical way with an underlying message only the intelligent few can grasp that leaves open to endless theories and discussion, it' about a witch who likes to strip naked.
Gonna speak with my wallet here and not support AC3 because of this muppet. On AC3's release day, I'll be sure to play some Bayonetta.

I think Hutchinson is just failing to consider the cultural differences that lead to each country/region's devs to come up with thematically different games. Gears of War is more to my tastes. Dragon's Dogma and Bayonetta? A little too out there for me, thanks. But you can't compare apples to oranges.
(Then again, the man's as entitled to his opinions as anyone else.)
