Good news for the Blizzard faithful, as the beta for StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm is on its way.
Posting on the Battle.net blog, Blizzard stated the multiplayer beta for Heart of the Swarm will be starting "very soon," with invites being prepared. The first wave will include many of the players that assisted Blizzard with Patch 1.5 for StarCraft II, along with some pro-gamers and members of the press. More people will be added in later, but Blizzard is sticking with a select group at the outset.
Anyone interested in the beta for Heart of the Swarm -- and what StarCraft II player isn't -- should make sure their beta status on Battle.net is updated. All you need to do is click on the "Beta Profile Settings" section of your Account Management page and opt-in. The studio says opting-in does not guarantee access to the beta, but it at least gives you a chance. Blizzard will also work with fansites and "community personalities" to hold beta key contests, and says to keep your eyes peeled for all opportunities.
Blizzard has been releasing information on Heart of the Swarm periodically over the past year or so, but the beta announcement means we are that much closer to finding out what happens with the Queen of Blades.
