Be warned, the game has "always online" DRM, so you need to be connected to the internet at all times to play. L-A-M-E.

Wonder if I can just get whatever patch they're using and apply it to my original version. Or I could just install Window 95/98 and do it that way too >>

One of the best JRPG's... maybe, but the RPG genre is huge and full of hundreds of better games. I'm not going to go into the reasons why it's an overhyped good game but those who've played many RPG's over the years know it to be true. I liked it, and I plan on re-buying it without a doubt.

Supernova1332 You're free to not include it on your list, but it deserves the high spot it holds for many. Tastes vary.

Taste would denote that they've played many RPG's and have a base of reference. Some do have a taste for FF7, and I can see why some would prefer it to other RPG's.

In my experience though, the majority of those that say it's their favorite RPG do so because of nostalgia (being their first RPG) or because they don't play many RPG's. It's not because it's an amazing game, it's because of sentimentality or ignorance of the genre.

Nostalgia is a perfectly good reason to hold a game on a pedestal, i certainly do it too. To claim that game is one of the best because of that though is a slight to great games.

Supernova1332 I've played maybe hundreds and I still stand by my comments. I'm not just nostalgic; more often than not I hate playing old games.

I'll stick with my old edition that has modded character models which actually look good and the good quality music of the PSX version patched in. But, "thanks," Square, for porting FFVII again, and not making a good new FF.

That's perfectly alright that you think it's a great game. As I said, I can see why some would like it more than other RPG's. I know you've played many games, and I'm sure your collection under your neo profile barely scratches the list of all the games you've ever played. You've got a great base of reference, spanning many genres. Many people don't have that.
I'd put money on 85% of people who love FF7 have never even played a single Ultima, Gothic, Might and Magic, or even panzer dragoon. Admittedly PD is decently hard to get a hold of and is pretty damn expensive.

Bahamut Lagoon, Makai Kingdom, Tales of Phantasia, Suikoden, Phantasy Star 3/4, LUFIA(Very biased here but still a great game), Terranigma/Illusion of Gaia/Soul Blazer, Chrono Trigger, Grandia(haven't played 3 yet but the rest were fantastic), Skies of Arcadia, Lunar, Star Ocean... I could really go on and on about the games that have done more or better in some areas but it's all opinion.

I can understand where some come from for loving the game but it really didnt do anything new or exciting in my eyes. Fantastic story and characters, some fun mini-games, but nothing earth shattering or unique about the mundane gameplay.

I have spent hundreds of hours playing FF7 and it is a good, solid, quality game without a doubt, but there wasnt much that separated it gameplay wise from any other JRPG.
It's like Halo, it does many things good but it doesnt really excel in much compared to other FPS games.

I'm not here to bash on anyones taste, but not nearly all of the people who loved it actually had taste in RPG's or JRPG's at the time. They were hardly mainstream in america or even europe.

Lol wtf are you talking about? Ff7 is pretty much untouchable.. I've played most of the games you listed, some of them are a seperate genre of rpg then ff7 is..

When it comes to rpg's.. Ff7 has the best

Story
Music
Characters

Some games might do better in certain categorys, but NONE are as well rounded as ff7 are.

tenklis I was referring to bigcountry's general usage of RPG, not just Turn Based JRPG's.

I can't believe I forgot to mention the music though, Nobuo Uematsu is a genius. FF7 has amazing music but that kind of goes for all of the games he has worked on, except those that cant make use of 'real' instruments. The music is still great, but it just can't have the same depth.

Oh okay my mistake!! He is indeed a genius, if you haven't played lost odysee yet I highly reccoment it. It's the last great turn based rpg I've played.

Always On DRM? Not keen on that. For Celestia's sake it's a what, 15 year old title? Worried about people thieving it when it's priced in the $10 to $12 (pre-tax) region?

When it appears on Steam I might get it, but only if it doesn't have always on DRM.
