Why are so many big companies having this sort of thing happen lately? Pretty annoying, makes them look bad.

Big company = larger amount of data = bigger target and higher profile news.

Unfortunately data breaches and loss are quite common but only get widely reported in the biggest cases. Data security is a huge topic and you'd have thought larger companies would invest more in ensuring the integrity of their systems, but research shows there is insufficient understanding of security as a whole among companies and even a complacency to invest in good security measures since, from a business perspective, the benefit of security solutions are often difficult to measure as they sit silently in the background. This often means investment in those systems inevitably loses out when the budget begins to tighten which leads to more likelihood of the resulting weaker protection being exposed by attackers who are well aware of this and always looking to exploit it.

Until companies give data security the priority and understanding it deserves stories like this will continue to occur and companies will continue to be embarrassed by crackers, unfortunately at the expense of their customers' information.

From what I've seen only companies that deserve it have been getting hit

There is a problem though, because there will always be a way into a secured network. There doesn't exist a perfect system as far as I'm aware. Either way, that kinda sucks for the US players. Hopefully the data taken from other regions isn't more than just emails.

Fatherbrain30 Except it's the community who suffers each time a company suffers a security breach like this. That's our info potentially on the line there. :\

Hellfire29 Oh no! Sorry to hear, and here's hoping the asshole didn't do much damage. Such an awful, shitty feeling. (Happened to my Guild Wars account a while back.)

Hellfire29 I would still suggest you look into your PC's security as this might just be a coincidence, it's likely you got keylogged.
