One of my favorite rumors prior to E3 this year was the potential announcement of a brand new Prince of Persia game. A scant few images showing off a bald warrior in an Arabian setting, with the text "Judgment is Coming" was just enough details to star the rumor mill buzzing. Is was all for naught, during E3 the trailer was never show and the rumor never came to fruition -- until now. A brand new in-game screenshot from a clearly labeled Prince of Persia title has appeared. Game on.
The new screenshot, originally posted on the official Prince of Persia forums, is clearly labeled "POP_ZERO_2" and is rather similar to Assassin's Creed in visual-style. The title Prince of Persia Zero certainly sounds like potential reboot, something I wouldn't be surprised to see the franchise go with. However, as the screenshot is nowhere near being official, we could also assume it's from another tittle -- or even an Assassin's Creed setting we have yet seen.
Oddly, however, the leaked screenshots from before E3 are both similar and quite different. For instance, the hulking character appears to have a different skin color, though that's hard to tell due to lighting in the old pictures, and also quite obviously has hair. Otherwise, the setting seems similar with its clay bricking and thatched roofs. Even the shirtless spectators appear similar. Also, the new protagonist certainly looks like he could deal out an extent of "judgment" if he so chose.
A Prince of Persia announcement would hardly be surprising, being such a hugely popular brand. What is surprising is that Ubisoft would leave the franchise gathering dust for so long. Hopefully more news, preferably official, is coming soon -- after all they have a trailer already made apparently. My personal thoughts on the matter are that Sony and Microsoft decided to shut down any big next-gen title announcements for E3 -- and Prince of Persia is going to be one of those titles. Expect news on this whenever that next-gen info dam breaks.
