John Carmack has taken the stage at QuakeCon to deliver the event's keynote. If you don't know Carmack, the guy is a tech-savant and loves to break down and build up his games, but Warren Spector he is not. So when Carmack comes out and casually starts to toss out the title Doom 4, the audience wonders if they should cheer, id marketing folk wonder if they can kill him, and Carmack wonders what the big deal is.
Yes, Doom 4 is in development, Carmack's keynote has made that very clear. He has almost made is clear that neither him nor anyone at id is going to divulge too much information about the game. Carmack pointed out that they made a grave mistake with Rage, showing too much of the title too early, and thus gamers expected something much different than what id produced. They won't do that again, especially with Doom 4. Still, Carmack has no problem letting us know the game is definitely being worked on, at least.
What Carmack was willing to talk about is Doom 3 BFG Edition, including what he thinks was a serious issue when Doom 3 and Rage were initially released. Carmack thinks id did a wrong by PC gamers with both initial releases, and wants BFG to better that wrong. Expect the title to be optimized for PC users. Check out the trailer below to see if BFG is something you'd be interested in.
Rest easy, Doom 4 is in development, and while it may be a ways out Carmack himself that id is working harder to put more games out, faster. Hopefully Doom 4 comes out in a less casual, more official manner before too long.
