Apogee bringing back Rise of the Triad, so jack up the heavy metal and turn on God and Dog mode
Duke who? Wolfen-what? ROTT is back, so get ready to eat lead, outsider
There was a time when first person shooters were excessively violent, difficulty beyond all reason, and story and realism were discarded in favor of action and sweet level design. In this regard, Duke Nukem 3D and Wolfenstein 3D were mere precursors to the epic title that was Rise of the Triad -- and it's back. Apogee announced today the rebirth of ROTT, developed by Interceptor Entertainment using Unreal Engine 3. Interceptor is known for Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded on the 360, and lucky for us they currently employ the original ROTT level designer Joe Siegler. This is going to be good.
Rise of the Triad was initially planned to be an expansion/sequel to Wolfenstein 3D, back in the day when Apogee was known as 3D Realms and helped publish id's titles before Doom. The expansion was canned, but was born anew as a standalone title. Many will never know the tale, but initially the three corporations that make up the Triad were using Hitler as a puppet. It's a terrible shame that many gamers will know the true backstory for ROTT.
Anyways, the new title being developed by Interceptor should feel right at home for fans of 90s FPS games. Here's justa few of the exciting features to be included in ROTT:
- Blast through over 20 of levels of explosive single-player action.
- The full arsenal of over-the top weapons is back, including the Flamewall, Firebomb, Split Missile, Drunk Missile and, of course, the Excalibat!
- The maniacal modes return, too, with God mode, Elasto mode, Mercury mode, Shrooms mode and everyone's favorite, Dog mode!
- Offline single-player and multiplayer allows for instant action.
- The iconic original soundtrack has been completely re-forged in the fires of heavy metal!
The title will be coming solely to PC and accordingly will have extensive modability, allowing players to create their own levels and share them through Steamworks. There's also achievements, special events and secrets, over-the-top gore and dismemberment, and an option to switch to the classic sounds and music. The new Rise of the Triad is a love letter to fans of 90s era 3D Realms.
Expect more information on Rise of the Triad later this year.
