Heroes of Newerth, facing down two juggernauts in League of Legends and Dota 2, is taking efforts to create a more welcoming and open experience. Thusly, S2 Games is announcing a switch to the upcoming All Heroes Free model, starting tomorrow, July 20. Much as the name implies, the All Heroes Free model will immediately open access to all playable heroes for all players. S2 is hoping this will, "level the eSports playing field," and, "make it easier for players to bring their friends to the game."
Previously, Heroes of Newerth employed a rotating 16 free heroes system, similar to the 10 free champion system that League of Legends utilizes. Players could then purchase heroes at a price to have full access to them. Seeing as all heroes will soon be free, S2 will reward players that have previously bought champions with real money. They'll receive the new Mecha Gemini skin, a robotic avatar for the popular Gemini hero. These players will also attain the Legacy rank, which I'm unfamiliar with, but appears to allow players to accrue points, which they can spend on more awards.
Heroes of Newerth is fighting an up-hill battle against other MOBAs, and even with the addition of All Heroes Free it may not be enough. Still, it's admirable that S2 Games is doing as much as they can to encourage further community growth and provide the best experience for its players. Again, All Heroes Free mode launches tomorrow, July 20.
