Dishonored designer: Too many sequels have littered game market
There's also "too many established IPs"
Dishonored designer Viktor Antonov has said the game market is currently littered with "too many sequels".
The visual design director of Arkane Studio's forthcoming title, who has also headed Half-Life 2's City 17, stated that "too many sequels, and too many established IPs" has been a common occurrence in this industry.
"A lot of them are war games. And they're great projects and great entertainment, but there's a lack of variety today. So, when you step out of this established genre, people cannot grasp it, or the press tries to find a match. There's a place for thousands of different sub-genres and genres. Imagine the times when you were in the '40s and there were Westerns in Hollywood cinema: there were so many of them that none will be compared with another one, because there was a genre.
"We're doing a historical piece, a retro-futuristic piece, which has pretty much nothing to do with BioShock except for the fact that it doesn't take place in the far future, but has references to the past. And, unfortunately, BioShock and Dishonored are the only two games that go into that fiction for the past - how many years?
"So, lack of variety in what's in the market leads to associations like this. There should be more historical realistic worlds out there. And too bad there are not; I was expecting there to be 20 games like this."
Dishonored is currently scheduled for a release on October 9 in North America and three days later in Europe.

Bethesda has been doing a really good job lately; New Vegas, RAGE, Skyrim, Dishonored. When I think about it, I'd have to say that Bethesda is currently my favourite gaming company.
Sequels aren't a bad thing, far from it, but YEARLY sequels are a huge issue. You're paying 60+ dollars for basically the same game with a few tweaks every year.
To top it all off and perhaps even worse most of them are shooters and even the non-shooters are becoming shooters.
Id love to see a lot more new IPs too, but ultimately, i want an interesting and challenging game to play, regardless if its a sequel or not.
As for what the article is talking about it with sequels. It depends on the IP for me, games that have a continuous story running throughout need to stop at about 3, after that customers get sick of waiting for the conclusion they're craving in my experience. Games that have an entirely new story (and sometimes universe) with each instalment may as well go on until the gameplay gets stale or outdated.
Dishonored actually looks pretty promising in my opinion by the way. The powers and abilities all seem based around stealth and I hear it's possible to complete the game without killing any enemies. That more stealth less gratuitous explosions approach is definitely something I like!
