I Wanna Be the Guy: Gaiden's first episode now available, you are not prepared
The progenitor of a series of masochistic 2D platformers receives its own follow-up
I Wanna Be the Guy: The Movie: The Game was released in 2007 and might be one of the most influential independent games in the last five years. The title, developed solely by Michael "Kayin" O'Reilly, ushered in an era of insanely difficult adventure/platformers. Yet despite the game's cult popularity, Kayin has found himself distracted by side-projects... until now. On July 14 Kayin officially released the first 3-stage episode of I Wanna Be the Guy: Gaiden.
I Wanna Be the Guy: Gaiden is a direct sequel to IWBTG, starring The Lad who is searching The Kid after his (spoilers) ascension to The Guy. Expect to see some familiar settings in Gaiden, but mostly just expect terrifyingly difficult gameplay. Here's a list of everything included in Act I of this new, episodic title:
- New stage based gameplay
- 3 Stages
- Configurable Controls with Gamepad support
- Trophies (also supported through Gamejolt)
- Time Trial Leaderboards(Only through Gamejolt)
- A new button! Z to jump, X to shoot and X to BIIIONIC AAAARM
- Probably won't crash!
The sad thing though, is that this may be all the I Wanna Be the Guy: Gaiden we see for a while. Kayin is neck deep in development of his Castlevania-style platformer Brave Earth, and won't be returning to Guy until later. Kayin wants to put out more episodes, but there's nothing currently in the works.
Either way, the first episode of I Wanna Be the Guy: Gaiden is now available. Check it out and maybe cry yourself to sleep tonight.

Watched a stream from EVO on youtube, it took some guy who was apparently very good at the first game about two hours to complete the first level, second level, couple screens of the third level, and the final boss.
