Fortnite, Epic's first Unreal Engine 4 title, to be PC exclusive

During an SDCC panel for the upcoming Epic Games title Fortnite, Cliff Bleszinski broke some surprising news. Fortnite will be the companies first Unreal Engine 4 title, and that the previously Xbox 360 directed game would now be PC exclusive.

Bleszinski started the panel off with the no-holds-barred announcement, quickly turning this into a console vs. PC firestarter:

"We're here and we're announcing that this is a PC-designed game, it's shipping exclusively for the PC. Next-gen's here. It's been here. It's a high-end PC."

From there, the panel took a look at Fortnite's gameplay, focused mainly on bunker construction, which sounds extremely customizable. There was apparently no coverage of actual combat in the game, despite its premise pertaining to holding off waves of zombies during the night. I wish I could tell you more about it, but there was no video stream of the event.

Expect to hear more about the now PC exclusive Fortnite in coming months, and hopefully Epic will be putting out the gameplay they showed very soon.

Do I sense some character creation? If so, I'll be watching this carefully, though the PC exclusive thing kinda leaves me ticked.

Pretty game is pretty.. The second I saw some of the shots from this game I instantly said to myself "the fidelity is that good these could easily be stills from a new Dreamworks film".. If this is the future of gaming going forward then I'm impressed. Yes the PC has had games that have been pushing this level of fidelity for a while but this is a new level of polish. I'm impressed.

Weird way to show off your new engine. The lighting looks really good, but everything else is meh. No tessellation on anything as far as I can tell. The bricks and planks seem like they would be an obvious target for it, but they're completely flat. Polygon count doesn't seem particularly high, looking at that slide and plant on this image.

I some how get the feeling this is Cliffy expressing his disappointment with how (relatively) weak the next gen systems are currently rumored to be.

Really happy to see the PC getting some love, I was really intrigued when I saw this on the VGA's. This is a game I've been tracking, I was starting to get scared it had fallen into development limbo.

Yeah it really does seems as if he's trying to almost force the hand of Microsoft and Sony as if he is saying. "If you don't make the next gen consoles more powerful we will stick with PC going forward". I think out of Sony and Microsoft it will probably force Microsoft into doing something as without Gears of War the Xbox 360 only really had Halo and Forza so they owe a lot to Epic and Cliffy B. Not sure Sony will care all that much, but if both of the next gen systems fail to live up to Epic Games standards then bring on a new generation of PC exclusives it'll be just like old times.

I'll need to see more of the game to know whether I'd play it. Not much is known right? Seems to be Zombie Survival based, but beyond that...

By day you scavenge in what seems like a rather open world environment, you take those items and you build forts and buildings to stay safe at night. Then it is a fight for survival.. The game is co-op based so while the concept may seem quite repetitive I think it'll take a while before players get bored as there are tiers of materials, so there will be experimentation involved to create the perfect fort.

What ever happened to the tradition of the new Unreal Engine being kicked off with an Unreal Tournament release? Hopefully they haven't dropped the series and are planning on a release it for multiplat when the consoles come out.
Its commendable that they're creating a PC exclusive game to demonstrate their tech instead of waiting for MS and Sony, a bit of a shame its not something realistic that really showcases UE4's abilities though
