The key will be if Microsoft can get the app backup that Google and Apple have. You can have the greatest tablet in the world and no one will give a flying *bleep* if it doesn't have apps.

sounds like itll operate like a full laptop would (i5 cpu, upgradable, full keyboard, full win8 os) unlike an ipad, so apps wouldnt really make sense since it can do everything a desktop would.

if so, its not only competition for the ipad, but netbooks / ultrabooks / laptops themselves! not too shabby.

Odd naming choice but I still like the commercial version of Surface the most >> just saying after using it a few times its pretty nice and I wouldn't mind it replacing my actual desk surface area.

The Pro version is Windows 8, so yeah that competes with more than just the iPad. The other one is something called Windows RT, which I imagine having roughly the same functionality as iOS.

So are all versions of this device going to be a "fully fledged" PC sized down to tablet form or just the pro?

Either way it eliminates the need of apps if it really is a computer. Apps are just rundown programs afterall. This actually seems to be a step in the right direction after Zune and WP7 (and I owned both and liked both but I can easily see why Apple beat them both down).

I've been using the Windows 8 preview on my HP laptop-tablet hybrid for a while now and the apps are a great addition. It's nice that some simple things (email, news, media player) can be simple apps you open and view. Then when work needs getting done, you switch to the Desktop view and you are back to the windows setup we are all use too.

absolutely correct, cant agree more... there has to be lots of app to choose from for windows "tablet".... there are already lots of tabs on market and why would anyone but if you have no apps to offer...
