I'm confused.... Why are they doing this and not shipping our Doom 4?
I'd guess to recoup losses after the bajillion years it took to develop Rage. But yeah, testing the waters too.

I see improved textures on some surfaces, mostly floors and doors. Demons look untouched. In one little spot I thought I saw some ambient occlusion going on, but it's probably just a color finagle, giving the illusion of it. Geometry is more or less the same. Looking at the head of the zombie I can tell they added a few more angles to smooth it out. Shadows are as angular as ever.

It's apparently running on the same, old engine. They've retextured a few inanimate objects, added enough angles to smooth out the most poorly rounded objects, and that's all I can see. Lighting effects are largely untouched unless they've altered energy projectiles and muzzle flash, which they've haven't shown us. In my opinion it's not worth buying if you own the original. Better to have spent the time working on Doom 4.

I think they are testing the waters while Doom 4 is in development. The game will come out at some point without this but what I think Bethesda are doing is seeing how many people get excited for this and how many people buy it. So while it's a good way to make money, it's also a great way to gauge fan reaction to all things Doom and introduce players that have never played Doom 3 to what is a great game..

I remember a time on Neoseeker where, if you could play Doom 3, your PC could play anything. I even remember Redemption himself posting a guide on tweaks to be able to play this game. It's amazing how fast technology progresses because now it doesn't look that great.
