Pics or it didn't happen..

Though seriously this is interesting, if Crytek are actually telling the truth and that AnvilNext, Unreal Engine 4 and Luminous Engine are just catching up to CryEngine 3's capabilities then the graphics whores amongst us are in for a treat potentially.

Is it just me or has Crytek been really pretentious lately? First everyone is ripping people off now their tech is so much better tham everyone elses... little off-putting tbh.

Though they could rectify that by announcing Timesplitters 4 and I would love them for eternity.

Honestly, I think alot of these developers are trying to phase out the current consoles. Whereas the console giants are trying to prolong their life for at least a bit longer. I think it's going to be interesting how this plays out.

I think the big three realize that putting out $400+ consoles isn't going to net them a lot of success in a down economy, especially when graphics have started hitting the roof in terms of quality and realism. Most people aren't diligently looking at every minute detail for every screenshot, so the jump from the games coming out now to something like the demo that hit for Unreal 4 go by unnoticed, not worth the extra hardware needed to render all the fine details.

At least that's how it is for me. Then again, Crytek has never seemed all that interested in catering to my tastes, so no surprise there.

Totally agree with you. Me personally and my wallet could stand for this gen to last longer.

if consoles go all cheapo on graphics this upcoming generation... hopefully PC will see a real revival.

id love to see more modern PC hardware maxed out.

but i dont know crytek... try putting out a tech demo on par with the luminous engine demonstration... not just new versions of ocean waves and sunbeams through palm trees.

I was thinking the same thing whilst reading this. It sounds very pretentious.

I also agree about Timesplitters 4. That would be awesome, very awesome indeed.

bbb7002004, Graphics haven't hit the roof and the fact that so many studios are spending so much money on new graphical technologies shows that there is still a market for graphics. To these developers the goal is to have Hollywood quality visual effects rendered in real time and we are still 10-15 years from that. If no one cared they wouldn't spend the insane amounts of money on this stuff yet they do. To a large amount of gamers seeing that Unreal Engine 4 video just opened their eyes to how much better graphics can get..

The roof for game graphics is the film Avatar, that is what developers want games to look like eventually and that is why Crytek are working on CryEngine 4, it's why UbiSoft created AnvilNext, it's why Epic created Unreal Engine 4, it's why Square Enix created Luminous Engine etc.. There is a lot of money going into graphics technology, to these developers it is made worth it when everyone sees games like Watch_Dogs and the first thing they say above anything else is "that looks gorgeous".. I get that Crytek don't appeal to your tastes and maybe the whole graphics race doesn't appeal to you, but the graphics race isn't over and won't be for 15 years yet.

But for most people the "race" never mattered to begin with. Why do you think the PS2s and Wiis of the world are so successful with more powerful competition, and why Angry Birds and Farmville have millions more downloads than the top of the art graphical monsters? Because the majority of people don't care about graphics.

To gamers those that care about games for the most part care about graphics. What you are listing other than PS2 which was a graphical powerhouse back in it's day 12 years ago so it doesn't count are casual games that appeal to none gamers, of course they don't give two shits about graphics but they aren't the people this tech is aimed at.

This tech is aimed at the 50 million Call of Duty fans, the 15 million Battlefield fans, the 68 million Xbox 360 owners, the 66 million Playstation 3 owners and the millions upon millions of PC gamers.. You are choosing the only market that doesn't care about graphics when the majority of the gaming world does in some capacity.. Seriously if the race never mattered these studios wouldn't spend hundreds of millions of dollars researching it, they wouldn't waste their money, the fact they are spending such money on it shows it's a market the majority of gamers want to see an advancement in.

If people care so much, why do they buy 360's when PC's are superior? It's not like its all that hard or expensive to get a decent rig up and running anymore.

And if you really think that the jump for the "next gen." is going to be anywhere near as noticeable as its been in the past, then there's really no point in continuing this.

Really, graphics DON'T matter. If graphics did matter, why make a game instead of a picture or something. The only thing that matters about game systems is to enjoy the content of the game.

"Really, graphics DON'T matter."

its really simple people: if graphics didnt matter, we'd still be developing games for the NES.

graphics engines just dont only make things prettier, gameplay / the gaming experience and graphics / processing power are intimately tied.

"It's not like its all that hard or expensive to get a decent rig up and running anymore. "

spend 5 minutes in the hardware forums here and youll see, for a TON of people, this is not the case.

"And if you really think that the jump for the "next gen." is going to be anywhere near as noticeable as its been in the past, then there's really no point in continuing this."

this is too vague, really. we dont even know what 'next gen' is yet, so to make predictions is a bit premature. i can say this though: next-gen engines on PC vs current ps3 games will be night and day. perhaps the lay person may not be able to appreciate it as easily, but that is not my problem.

I personally think graphics matter quite a bit, but at the same time there's a "good enough" threshold for anything out there. People don't need the absolute best graphics to enjoy a game, and games with the worst graphics are also not that enjoyable IMO.

In the end the graphics and sound are a major part of the experience for me. If I can have the best experience that's what I would want. So for instance, if Halo 4 came out on PC with ultra high resolution textures and audio, that's what I'd go for. Otherwise, if it must be a console exclusive, I'm happy to play it on the X360 as well.
