Anyway I'm not complaining, I'd rather pick up both a PS3 and PS4 and have a x86 core architectured console thats more efficient and produces higher quality PC ports
the thing with consoles is that you cant upgrade them (i.e their cpu, gpu etc) which limits it. But with PC you can upgrade anytime. So PC will beat console graphics
Replying to this a bit late.

I realise that but the thing is the instruction sets will be unified for once. Right now because all 3 machines are on different architectures any ports will have reduced efficiency (different from fidelity). For example games will play more like Crysis 2 as opposed to GTA IV (Crysis 2 will run on low spec and even better on high spec machines because its optimised directly for x86 but its assets are console standard leading to the initial horrible gfx whereas GTA IV looks pretty horrible and is poorly optimised for even high spec machines).

Not to mention that if the PS4 is x86 and the 360 uses a DX API equivalent it would hopefully make more sense to develop for PC first with the highest quality assets then down port to consoles since porting to the PS4 will only involve modifying DX-Open GL (or whatever the PS4 will use) and XBOX from x86->whatever the 720 will use.

Just another PS to add; I have two of each so far... except the Mobiles, don't really like mobile gaming.

but still... its sonys product. They should know everything about their own products. Im pretty sure the devs can make the ps4 have backwards if they work hard.
It's not that easy if it was they would do it.

There are limitations on what hardware can do. Just because it is newer doesn't inherently mean it is more powerful than what they are replacing. When Sony built the Playstation 3 they merely wanted a processor that was good at multitasking and nothing else this made it powerful but not so much in a gaming capacity. Though because games have been designed with it and designed to use all 7 cores it has means if they use a different kind of processor, getting the old games to run on it is nigh on impossible. This isn't a simple case of "if they want it they will have it" as life isn't ideal like that unfortunately.

i can see people wanting backward compatibility for convenience, but beside that, all thats good about it up added graphics features like upscaling, AA support, etc.

the more generations we go through, the harder and more expensive backward compatibility will be. you can do it all through software, but its imperfect and often takes a ton of processing power. you can do it through hardware, which is the best way, however thats increasingly expensive (you want the ps4 to have a ps1, ps2 and ps3 chip in it??)

so, in a sense, by being so dead set about backward compatibility, you can cannibalize the current gen.

also, whose the tard who reported MetallicaDragon's comment? looks like someone reported it just because they disagreed; shameful.
Pretty much agree with you and the another reason the PS4 won't have backwards compatibility is because the PS3 used the Cell Processor, they're making the PS4 completely different and it also will help the game developers to make games for the PS4.

As for the reported comment it was by accident from someone using a PSP.

It's sad that Microsoft and Sony are only after money. They need to care about customers/players.

Don't tell me nintendo is like them, Nintendo is my favorite company..
Massive lols were had at your complete delusion.

I dont care what happens as long as the price is reasonable and that it has backwards compatibility

Nintendo are like them want to know why? Because they are a business and what do business operate for? Money, that glorious substance that makes the World we live in work. You don't think Nintendo are in it for the money? You think they needed to release the Wii Balance Board? The numerous peripherals?

Yes Sony and Microsoft like money but not as much as Nintendo.. Sony and Microsoft sold their consoles at a loss to get high spec, high quality systems into peoples homes. They then made money off licencing fee's for games and peripherals. Nintendo on the other hand sold a console that cost them $80 to manufacture at $280 made billions upon billions of dollars and then continued to make more money off peripherals the console didn't need.

Anything other than controllers is not necessary and is a blatant money grab. I include Kinect, Move and Balance Board in this, though yet again Nintendo had additional things like the snap on Wheel peripheral the Golf Club peripheral, Wii Motion Plus which wasn't free even though it was something that should have been in the controller from day one.. So to think Nintendo is unlike them when they are borderline worse than them is unfortunately mistaken.

Well...What they don't want to say is PS4 is 'NOT' compatible with PS3, so that Sony can make more money out of PS3...Stupid Capitalists!!!! Greed is the problem here!!!! Not quality of games or consoles!!!
Umm It's less about money..

As hardware gets more advanced it gets harder to emulate. There are already rumours that both Playstation 4 and Xbox 720 will be using PC based hardware instead of the bespoke one of a kind stuff in previous systems which does make backwards compatibility hard. It may be hard to believe but there are very few PC based processors even now that can match the processor in the Playstation 3, it doesn't make them worse it just means that it'll be hard to emulate the games..

If and when Sony and Microsoft come out next year and say it can't do backwards compatibility, it's not because they don't want to as of course they do. If a system supports the previous gen games then people will upgrade to it faster knowing their old games will offset the lack of new games. So they won't leave backwards compatibility out unless they have no choice.

Yes Sony and Microsoft are after money, but removing backwards compatibility isn't the way to do it. Yes Sony licenced the ability to make HD re-releases of Playstation 2 games, but they only did that after 5 years of trying to get Playstation 2 games running on the Playstation 3 hardware. They succeeded for a few as there are a few on the Playstation Store that legit work on Playstation 3 hardware, but to get a few working after 5 years of work shows how hard it is.. Just accept that as hardware gets more powerful that unless the new system has similar hardware to the previous system backwards compatibility becomes near impossible.

MetallicaDragon Sorry about that. Didn't mean to report you. I was browsing on my PSP and things were a little weird. I actually agree with you since I never get rid of my consoles and there aren't any signs of them giving up now. The PS4 not being backwards-compatible isn't too much of an issue.

For Sony its not so much an issue of money as it is the fact they swap their architectures around. Whilst Microsoft have stuck by IBM's Power PC architecture Sony have been swapping around in recent console iterations. Since they had no viable option for emulation with the PS3 they literally had to build PS2 components within the PS3 for backwards compatibility, leading to its high price and subsequent fall in price after removal of backwards compatibility.
