Independent developer CodeHatch is toiling away at its newest game, the free to play Starforge. This is normally the part where I'd slap it with some genre label, but I'm hard pressed to come up with something suitable. To get a basic idea of what it's about, think of it as a bit like Halo meets Minecraft. That is to say, it's a shooter in which you've got to survive against aliens, but it also features world manipulation in that you can build bridges and dig holes and such. Oh, and you can go into infinite space whenever the hell you feel like it.
My only real worry at this point is it's a bit too broad and scattered for its own good. Besides the shooting, building, and space elements, there's also an RTS/FPS hybrid mode in which you build up a base and attempt to take out your enemy's while preserving your own. Whether it's biting off more than it can chew or just offering the sandbox approach to the extreme and delivering in full on that, only time will tell.
In the meantime, hit up one of the links below to get playing the first release. Be warned: for now, you'll probably need a high-end rig to get anything with decent framerate.
